Mote Aquarium’s Otter Care department is responsible for the care and training of our 3 resident North American River Otters (Lontra canadensis).

Interns/volunteers work directly with staff, assisting in all aspects of this program. Individuals will acquire basic animal husbandry skills and a working knowledge of positive reinforcement and operant conditioning techniques. Candidates should be able to handle high levels of responsibility, demonstrate self-motivation, and be able to work independently.  Primary responsibilities include but are not limited to; assisting with training sessions, food preparation, water quality testing, data entry and record keeping, public interaction and narrations, cleaning of the otter habitat and areas, creating and managing environmental enrichment devices,  conducting animal observations, performing miscellaneous office work and other assigned tasks.

*It is important to note that our training is protected contact in order to provide a safe working environment for our staff and the otters. Interns/Volunteers will not be feeding and/or training the otters. This position requires a lot of cleaning.

This position may allow for additional experience in the other animal care departments.

Coursework in biology, zoology, psychology, ecology, or animal behavior or science is required. Previous experience working in an animal care setting is preferred but not required. Computer skills are useful. A willingness to learn is a must.  

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Ability to work outdoors in a hot humid environment. Candidate is required to work in a fast paced setting and be on your feet most of the day. Must be able to lift and carry 50 lbs and have good physical stamina.  Should be able to climb, bend, and stoop.  Candidate must also be comfortable handling animal waste matter and prey items such as frozen chicks, mice, fish, and raw meat.
