  • Did you know that the U.S. imports an estimated $10 billion more in seafood than we produce and export each year? Many times, that means we're importing fish with no control over how they were raised or caught.
  • Did you also know that scientists estimate that many of the world's important fish species are fished at full capacity and, in many cases, fished beyond the point they can replenish themselves?

Since the 1990s, Mote has been concerned with both issues and working to address the need for new sources of farmed fish here in the U.S., as well as on ways to support wild fish stocks so that they can rebuild to levels that are sustainable into the future.

At Mote

We've been developing and perfecting the technologies that allow us to grow fish for food in ways that don't negatively impact the environment.

Our aquaculture research is based on a farm located 17 miles from the coast and far from any large body of water. Our goal is to show that fish can be farmed by filtering the water and using it again and again.

We've also been leading national and international efforts to rebuild marine species responsibly through a comprehensive, science-based approach that includes developing new and sustainable methods to grow fish and a science-based approach to measuring and improving the effectiveness of returning them to the ocean. Our fisheries enhancement research projects, done in partnership with independent and state groups, are producing impressive results.

Mote Aquaculture on Gulf Coast Journal

Mote Aquaculture Research Park was featured on the popular and Emmy-award winning "A Gulf Coast Journal" with Jack Perkins produced by WEDU-TV, West Central Florida's Community PBS station. The program showed why Mote has been dedicated to perfecting aquaculture methods that focus on water re-use and programs to restock depleted fisheries. About Us

Mote Marine Laboratory has been a leader in marine research since it was founded in 1955. Today, we incorporate public outreach as a key part of our mission. Mote is an independent nonprofit organization and has seven centers for marine research, the public Mote Aquarium and an Education Division specializing in public programs for all ages.
