206,183: That’s the number of hours that volunteers at Mote Marine Laboratory and Aquarium donated during 2011!

This evening, Mote will recognize this special group of people who demonstrate their love for our oceans and the need to conserve them by acting as Aquarium docents, walking the beaches during sea turtle nesting season and supporting Mote staff in hundreds of other ways.

“Volunteers are a critical part of the Mote family,” said Dr. Kumar Mahadevan, Mote’s president and CEO. “These amazing people have given us thousands of hours of support, which add up to make a real difference for our oceans and for our community.”

The volunteers will be recognized during Mote’s annual Volunteer Recognition Ceremony beginning at 5 p.m. in Mote’s Immersion Cinema, 1600 Ken Thompson Parkway, Sarasota. This year’s ceremony will recognize 370 volunteers, including those who have served for 25 years, 20 years, 15 years, 10 years, five years, three years and one year. The ceremony will also recognize volunteers who have donated 4,000 hours or more of service during their lifetimes with the President’s Call to Service award.

Please join us in thanking this remarkable group of people who collectively donated 41,700 hours to Mote in 2011!

Mote is dedicated to today’s research for tomorrow’s oceans with an emphasis on world-class research relevant to conservation and sustainable use of marine biodiversity, healthy habitats and natural resources. Research programs include studies of human cancer using marine models, the effects of man-made and natural toxins on humans and on the environment, the health of wild fisheries, developing sustainable and successful fish restocking techniques and food production technologies and the development of ocean technology to help us better understand the health of the environment. Mote research programs also focus on understanding the population dynamics of manatees, dolphins, sea turtles, sharks and coral reefs and on conservation and restoration efforts related to these species and ecosystems. Mote’s vision includes positively impacting public policy through science-based outreach and education. Showcasing this research is Mote Aquarium, open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. 365 days a year.
