Leave a Legacy for Tomorrow

If we could use sand dollars to fund our research, we'd be out scouring the beaches of the world from dawn to dusk. But since we can't, we look to you.

In these difficult economic times, many cannot support their favorite charities as they once did. One alternative is to remember Mote Marine Laboratory and Aquarium in your estate planning program. By doing so, you help make a difference today by protecting our future tomorrow.

Including Mote in your estate planning provides an important legacy that helps us continue in our mission for our children and our children's children. It also helps you reduce your tax burden by providing a charitable deduction equal to the value of the bequest at the time of your death and ensures that your assets are distributed in accordance with your wishes.

Dwight Davis

A Letter to Mote
What does it take to make a Mote donor? It must be different for different people. For me, it was a love of the sea from earliest childhood. When I retired from advertising and moved to Sarasota in 1986, I naturally gravitated to Mote Marine Laboratory and Aquarium. That’s where the fish were, and I felt very much at home as a volunteer Aquarium guide. The more I did, the more it satisfied me to contribute to Mote. It wasn’t just about giving my time, but about supporting the Lab financially as well. When my wife Tessie and I created a Charitable Remainder Unitrust, it was natural that Mote be named a beneficiary. Read more of Dwight Davis' letter.

As a result of the Pension Protection Act of 2006, you have new opportunities with regard to your IRA accounts. The new legislation offers a welcome incentive to use money in your IRAs to make a charitable donation to Mote Marine Laboratory.

The IRA rollover provision allows otherwise taxable distributions of up to $100,000 from a traditional individual retirement account (IRA) or Roth IRA to be excluded from gross income (For those of you age 70.5 and above). In the past, a donor had to report a withdrawal from an IRA as income and then declare an offsetting income tax deduction for the charitable contribution. The new provision no longer penalizes your charitable intent.

Please confer with your tax advisor or attorney to see if this charitable option could be a benefit for you and for your charity of choice.
