7th Symposium on Harmful Algae: Student and Manager Travel Awards Info & Application Process
With thanks to the generosity of numerous sponsors, we are now accepting applications for travel awards to support students,  post-doctoral scholars and managers to attend the 7th Symposium on Harmful Algae.  

Applicants must submit the information below in a single document by the May 24 conference early-registration deadline to the email address indicated in the appropriate section below.

Please note: The application deadline for student and travel manager awards has closed.
§ Student Application:

Student applications will be judged on the quality or unique nature of science to be presented, financial need of the applicant, the demonstration of effort to obtain additional funds and the applicant’s prior history of HAB travel awards (priority will be given to new applicants).

To apply for these funds, please submit the following information in a single document (preferably a PDF) to

  1. Applicant’s name, address and contact information, including email address
  2. Applicant’s current affiliation and academic standing (type of student, year of study, etc.)
  3. Academic advisor(s) name, address and contact information, including email
  4. Applicant’s general research interests and career goals (one paragraph)
  5. Activity at conference (poster or talk); authorship position on abstract (i.e. First, second, etc.)
  6. Firm estimates of travel costs including airfare, housing, meals and other costs of conference attendance
  1. Other sources of travel funds (i.e. How will the remainder of the trip be paid?
  2. Statement justifying the request for assistance (i.e. Why do you need the money?  What would you do without the award?)
  3. A short letter from your advisor describing why the funds are needed
  4. Copy of the applicant’s abstract submitted for the meeting
  5. Applications are due on or before May 24, 2013
Please Note: Travel awards for graduate students and postdocs include the following restrictions: Applicants must be enrolled as a student or working as a postdoc in a U.S. university or institution. Funds awarded will only provide partial travel support. Successful applicants will need to demonstrate that other sources of funds are available to supplement their award.
§ Manager Application:
Applications are now being accepted for funds to help defray the travel costs of public health and resource managers attending the Seventh Symposium on Harmful Algae in the U.S. Limited funding may be available for state, local and tribal managers who would otherwise not be able to attend. The purpose is to facilitate technology transfer and information exchange so that research results can be put to immediate management use. We especially encourage applications from managers who are newly involved in Harmful Algal Bloom issues.
To apply for these funds, please send a letter (preferably via email) to Judy Kleindinst at the U.S. National Office for Harmful Algal Blooms, The application letter should include the following information:
  1. Name, title and affiliation, mailing address, telephone number, email address
  2. Describe your management role with regard to harmful algal blooms
  3. Firm estimate of costs (including airfare, housing, registration, meals, and other travel needs).
  4. Other sources of travel funds (i.e., are matching funds available and how firm is that commitment?)
  5. Statement justifying the request for assistance
  6. Any other information that might help in the decision process
  7. Applications are due on or before May 24, 2013
