Tropical Research Laboratory in the Florida Keys


Situated in the heart of the Lower Keys and only 24 miles from Key West, Mote's Tropical Research Laboratory is a fully equipped marine science facility dedicated to marine research and education in the Florida Keys. 

In addition to providing a base of operation for Mote Marine Laboratory research programs in the Florida Keys,  the Tropical Research Laboratory is available for use to any marine research or education program. 

The facility is located within easy access to the variety of nearby habitats, including reefs, sea-grass meadows, near-shore hard-grounds, mangrove forests and unique terrestrial communities, most within the protection of National Wildlife Refuges and the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary.

The facility offers accommodations, a well-equipped dry lab, classroom with modern A/V equipment, indoor and outdoor wet labs, raceways and larger outdoor seawater holding tanks, vessels from 18'-25', SCUBA support, high-speed internet connection and a marine science library.

About Us

Mote Marine Laboratory has been a leader in marine research since it was founded in 1955. Today, we incorporate public outreach as a key part of our mission. Mote is an independent nonprofit organization and has seven centers for marine research, the public Mote Aquarium and an Education Division specializing in public programs for all ages.
