Home School Days

Join us each month for Mote Marine Laboratory’s Home School Days. Home schooled students and their families are invited to an exciting day of age-appropriate ocean themed learning experiences led by Mote’s professional marine science educators. Students will explore all aspects of Mote from visiting the manatees in the Goldstein Marine Mammal Center, touching the stingrays in the Mote Aquarium, catching critters in Sarasota Bay to taking a peek behind the scenes at Mote’s break through scientific research. Students will also learn about our local marine environment and easy ways they can contribute to conservation. Come to one or come to all…the ocean awaits you!

For students in grades 1st-12th (ages 6-18).

One Fish, Two Fish: Biodiversity of the Fishes of the Gulf of Mexico                                          Wed October 9th or Fri October 11th                                                                                                                            Sharks, sea horses, and moray eels are all fish!  They come in all shapes and sizes.   Get hands on with our local fish species and learn why they are all so different.   We will also be exploring how Mote studies fish and what can be done to protect our fishy friends.

Those Magnificent Mangroves: Exploring our Salt Tolerant Neighbor                                        Wed November 6th or Fri November 8th                                                                                       Mangroves are rich with life and are an important barrier for the mainland.  Come explore the ins and outs of our local mangroves, join in on a clean up and figure out just how these trees can tolerate the salty sea.

Whale of a Tale: Conservation and Adaptations of the Giants in the Sea                                  Wed December 11th or Fri December 13th                                                                                                                 Whales are the epitome of freedom and a symbol of the sea but they need our help.  From noise pollution to marine debris, the odds are stacked against them.  Come learn about these awe inspiring animals, easy ways to contribute to their conservation and how Mote scientists are testing for pollutants stored in the body of whales.
