Sturgeon Aquaculture ProgramCollege InternshipThe Sturgeon Aquaculture Program internship is an unpaid position. The intern will work as part of a team that operates a commercial demonstration sturgeon project located at the Mote Aquaculture Research Park, Sarasota, Florida. This Program produces sturgeon meat as well as caviar for sale. Daily tasks include, but are not limited to the following:
- Assisting with all aspects of sturgeon husbandry including feeding, fish grading, fish movement, water quality monitoring, gender differentiation and larval rearing.
- Assisting with the facility sanitation including system upkeep, tank cleaning and equipment pressure washing.
- Assisting with plumbing, carpentry, and other aspects of system fabrication and maintenance.
- Working in both indoor and outdoor environments, in rain or hot sun
- Assisting with data entry
The Mote Aquaculture Research Park is located approximately 17 miles from the main laboratory. Interns must have their own transportation to/from this location since Sarasota's public transportation system does not extend to the Park. Interns must enjoy working in a rural environment and not mind getting wet/dirty. This internship may require the physical ability to lift 50 lbs to shoulder height, walk/work on uneven surfaces, bend and stoop for prolonged periods of time. Working hours for this position are generally 8:00 am to 5:00 pm with an hour for lunch. A B.S. or A.A. degree in Aquaculture or Fisheries is preferred.
