College Intern Scholarships
Overview
Mote Marine Laboratory is pleased to announce the availability of a limited number of scholarships for bright and deserving students participating in the Mote College Intern Program. These scholarships are intended to provide partial support for living expenses for a full-time, 10 week or longer internship. The amount of each scholarship will vary according to intern financial need, internship duration, and the number of recipients. It is a one-time award of up to $2,000 per recipient. Scholarship recipients may be asked to produce a short presentation or complete a final report summarizing their training and accomplishments.
Available Scholarships
- The Majorie G. Gilbert and Louis S. Gilbert Scholarship: Established by the Golder family of Chicago in honor of long-time Mote volunteer Louis S. Gilbert who passed away in August 1996. This endowment has been augmented by generous donations from Mote volunteer Pauline Becker in honor of her late husband Gene, and the estate of Einar T. Anderson. The purpose of the Gilbert Scholarship is to honor and financially assist students interning in all Mote science, education and aquarium programs and support divisions.
- The Emily Argo Memorial Scholarship in Marine Mammal Research: Established by the Mote Scientific Foundation in honor of Emily Argo, a conservation biologist with Wildlife Trust and colleague of Mote researchers. Emily died in a 2003 plane crash while conducting aerial surveys of the endangered right whale. The purpose of the Argo scholarship is to honor and financially assist students interning in Mote's Center for Marine Mammal and Sea Turtle Research.
- The Chris Cattaneo Memorial Scholarship in Shark Biology: Established by the Cattaneo family of Warren, Mich., in honor of their son and brother, Chris, who died in 2003 in a personal watercraft accident. Chris had a deep, long-standing interest in shark biology. The purpose of the Cattaneo Scholarship is to honor and financially assist students interning in Mote's Center for Shark Research.
Donors interested in contributing to these scholarship funds or establishing new scholarship opportunities are encouraged to contact the Mote College Intern Program at intern@mote.org.
Mote College Internship scholarships are available to students participating in all Mote College Intern Programs except the Mote REU Program, which provides paid research internships through funding from the National Science Foundation. Scholarships are highly competitive, and students must exhibit financial need and possess a minimum grade point average of 3.2 on a 4.0 scale or equivalent to be considered for these awards. In addition to academic achievement and financial need, the scholarship selection committee also bases its decisions on the applicant's experience, career goals and placement in a specific Mote program. Students from minority groups under-represented in science are encouraged to apply for scholarships to promote diversity in the marine sciences. Scholarship recipients must be citizens or permanent residents of the United States or possess a valid work visa.
