What's New in the LibraryINTERNSHIP:
The library and archives has been providing resources, reference, and research for 35 years at Mote Marine Laboratory. Its collection is maintained for the support of marine research and education. The library is currently engaged in an archives grant project funded by The Arthur Vining Davis Foundations. The project involves the library’s special collections and includes basic processing, arrangement and description of the materials, preservation activities, and increasing accessibility to the collections. As part of the project, pertinent items in the collection are being digitized and added to Mote’s Institutional Repository, DSpace.
One of the special collections held at Mote is the Bass Biological Laboratory Collection. This collection includes the records of an early biological laboratory operating in southwest Florida during the 1930s and 1940s. Another special collection consists of the hand-written field journals from the early 1900s of a prominent ichthyologist, Charles M. Breder, Jr. The library plans to transcribe these hand-written journals/manuscripts, digitize them, and add them to DSpace using descriptive metadata. The library is seeking an intern to assist with this project. The intern will be involved in basic processing of archival collections, digitization of both the Breder and Bass collections, transcription of the Breder manuscripts, and data entry into the content management system, Archon.
The intern will participate in the following activities and tasks: Assist with various archival processing tasks such as arrangement and description, cleaning, and rehousing; assist with transcription, verification, and editing of pertinent hand-written Breder field journals/manuscripts; assist with digitization activities including scanning and creating TIFFS, JPEGS, and PDFs of selected materials; crop, format and enhance digital documents as needed; assist with descriptive metadata cataloging and loading of records into DSpace; and assist with data entry of descriptive elements into Archon, according to current archival standards. Knowledge of the following is helpful: o Awareness of current archival standards/best practices o Excellent research and writing skills o Experience with Adobe Pro and Photoshop o Previous use of Microsoft Office Suite o Familiarity with Dublin Core descriptive metadata o Previous experience handling fragile materials
Seeking intern with a background or interest in special collections, archival studies, library science, history of science, data management, or related field. Internship for a total of 200 hours are available through 2013 and early 2014. Scholarship funds are available for this internship. The library is open from 8 – 5 Mon. – Fri. PUBLICATION: Online at the Mote Marine Laboratory Gift Shop : Nature is Wonderful by Mina Walther, $10.00. Proceeds benefit Mote Marine Laboratory scholarship funds. Library & Archives Director Susan Stover and a host of Mote volunteers and interns worked to bring together beloved columnist Mina Walther's works in her second and final collection. Through her writing in her column for the Sarasota Herald-Tribune for over 25 years, Mina Walther invited people to see the awe and wonder of nature. Nature is Wonderful is a compilation of her insightful nature and environmental writing. In her own words, Mina explained her devotion, “As a retired high school biology teacher, I hope to remind readers from varied and divergent walks of life that brief reminiscences of nature on our planet can add to enjoyment of walks that might otherwise be purely for exercise.”
