1967 First ecological studies of Charlotte Harbor; sediments, salinity, fishes
1971 First Charlotte Harbor Field Station established at Placida
1972 Selby Environmental Health Fellowship established
1974 First ecological studies of Sarasota Bay and Venice waters
1975 Mote establishes 5 research programs, including Estuarine Ecology and Environmental Health
1979 Mote establishes Environmental Assessment Division
1981 First studies of Florida rivers begin
1984 First modern study of invertebrates living in Charlotte Harbor
1990 AAUS-approved scientific diving program established within the center
1991 Center’s first international research trip: southern coast of India
1994 Center provides first international training workshop at Mote
1998 Modern Center for Coastal Ecology established
2000 Centers adds Landscape Ecology Program
2001 Second Charlotte Harbor Field Station established on Pine Island
2001 Charlotte Harbor Program begins– first collective effort of Mote scientists
Mote Marine Laboratory has been a leader in marine research since it was founded in 1955. Today, we incorporate public outreach as a key part of our mission. Mote is an independent nonprofit organization and has seven centers for marine research, the public Mote Aquarium and an Education Division specializing in public programs for all ages.
