Dr. Ernest D. Estevez

Dr. Estevez joined Mote in 1979 and retired to become Senior Scientist Emeritus in 2012. His fields of study include invertebrate zoology, intertidal ecology and benthic biology. These fields are combined in studies of bays and estuaries — and especially tidal rivers — where Dr. Estevez studies the effects of water management practices on riverine and estuarine productivity. He has conducted studies in three dozen Florida rivers and two dozen tidal creeks, canals and other waterways.

Presently, Dr. Estevez is involved
in research in tidal rivers and creeks and in policy and outreach projects concerning sea-level rise in Florida. He is also involved with research collaborations in Jamaica and Cuba.

Since 1972
, Dr. Estevez has contributed to local and state resource management programs including national estuary programs and the protection of the Myakka River and watershed.
