Alan Hails
Title: Instrumentation Systems Engineer Phone: 941-388-4441 ext. 307 Email: Alan joined the Phytoplankton Ecology Program in February 2007 as an Oceanographic Instrumentation Engineer. Much of his work is applied to the design of and manufacturing systems development for the Optical Phytoplankton Discriminator (OPD) — instrumentation used to detect and measure Florida's red tide and other micro-algae. Recently this work has expanded to include improved OPD instruments, new designs of mobile toxin detection and collection instruments, and a Bycatch Friendly Electronic Fishing Buoy.
Alan also designs, programs and operates many of the ocean platforms used to deploy instruments including buoys, the Slocum Glider Autonomous Underwater Vehicles and the data telemetry shore stations and vessel systems.
With his prior career experience in the development of medical, marine and industrial electronic products, Alan is interested in pursuing the commercialization of technologies developed at Mote Marine Laboratory. Education B.S. Mechanical Engineering, U.S. Naval Academy, Annapolis, MD Awards
