Bob joined Mote in August 2005 after completing a 20-year career at Duke University, where he was the director of Data and Telecommunications and senior technical staff member of the North Carolina Networking Initiative. Bob currently wears many hats for the Phytoplankton Ecology Program: Linux systems administrator, web designer and application developer, embedded software developer, AUV software developer and bioinformatician.
Bob designed, developed, installed and supports the information technology behind the SO COOL systems, Mote's Beach Conditions Report™
and Mote's AUV tracking and control software. Bob is also the co­PI on the GCOOS Data Nodes grant. Bob's current research focuses on optimizing algorithms for high­speed search, classification and visualization of massive scientific datasets using functional languages including Lisp, Clojure, F# and Scheme. He is also engaged in the design of SO COOL's latest data collection engine, the Coastal Oceans Virtual Observatory Listener.
