Turtle upon arrival at Sea Turtle Rehabilitation Hospital.
5/17 Turtle was found floating near Veteran's War Memorial Park inside Madeira Beach, Florida. Turtle had numerous large barnacles and algae, so has been sick for a while. Turtle is floating, anemic, and somewhat emaciated, but is fairly active and has already been placed in water. Turtle may have Lethargic Loggerhead Syndrome....will know after running some blood tests. 5/22 Blood tests revealed Lethargic Loggerhead Syndrome. Ultrasound revealed free air in the coelomic cavity causing the flotation. Over 3 liters of air were removed and the turtle is no longer floating. Turtle has begun to eat. 5/30 Turtle is eating very well and is gaining weight. Turtle is beginning to respond to treatment for anemia. 6/20 Turtle is continuing to respond and is eating very well. 7/1 Doing very well. 7/26 Continuing to do well and gain weight. May be releasable in the next month or so. 8/5 Turtle has been tagged in preparation for possible release next week. 8/7 Turtle has been approved for release next week. 8/12 Turtle was successfully released this morning from Lido Beach, Sarasota. Release went very well.
