Turtle on arrival with tumors on body, fracture on rear carapace, and barnacles.
1/4 Turtle was found in Palm Beach County affected by fibropapillomatosis and several fractures of the caudal carapace that are 1-2 weeks old. Turtle is hypothermic, dehydrated, anemic, and weak and has been started on fluids and antibiotics. Turtle is being maintained out of the water overnight. 1/7 Turtle went into water yesterday and is doing fairly well. Not yet interested in food, but somewhat active. 1/12 Turtle began eating this afternoon. Seems to be somewhat better. 1/15 Turtle is eating everything offered and is more active. 1/23 Turtle is now gaining weight. Will likely schedule laser surgery for tumor removal next week. 1/30 Turtle continues to eat well and gain weight. Waiting for anemia to resolve a little more before surgery. 2/4 Anemia is improving and turtle is gaining weight. 2/8 Turtle had laser surgery this morning to remove all lesions. Although the turtle was slow to recover from the anesthetic, it is doing well. 2/13 Turtle is back to eating very well, although its white count is somewhat elevated, as would be expected. 2/25 Appetite continues to be very good and turtle is healing well. 3/4 Continuing to do very well. 3/12 An MRI done this past weekend at Bowes Imaging Center revealed mulitple internal tumors in the lungs of the turtle. Turtle was humanely euthanized yesterday and necropsied this morning. Necropsy revealed 15-20 small tumors (1-13 mm in diameter) in both lungs as well as an abscess in the spinal cord at the level of the carapace fracture.
