Species: Loggerhead (Caretta caretta)
Age Class: Adult
Gender: Male
Date Stranded: August 25, 2006
Location of Stranding: Near Sailing Squadron, Sarasota Bay
Date of Arrival: August 25, 2006
Number of Days of Care: 14 days
Final Disposition: Died September 7, 2006

Comments/Disposition:

  Turtle on arrival.

8/25 Turtle was found floating in Sarasota Bay by Mote staff.  It was brought to the Hospital for treatment.  It appears to be affected by red tide toxicosis and possibly blood parasites.  Treatment has been initiated. 8/28 Doing slightly better, but very weak. 8/30 Turtle is poorly responsive and very weak.  Unable to raise its head. 8/31 Turtle seems slightly more responsive today.  Test yesterday indicated that this turtle is definitely affected by red tide toxicosis. 9/3 Turtle is more responsive and stronger.  GI tract is now working and is receiving herring gruel via stomach tube. 9/6 Turtle is much weaker today and less responsive. 9/7 Turtle died during the night.  Necropsy is planned tomorrow.
