Comments/Disposition:

This turtle was found floating and entangled in fishing gear offshore from Sarasota and brought to the Sea Turtle Rehabilitation Hospital by the captain of the F/V Midnite Son. The turtle has damage to its left front flipper from the entanglement and has pneumonia and anemia. Treatment has been initiated. 4/3 Turtle had declined, but is doing better today. Bronchoscopy revealed collapsed bronchus in left lung, but right lung looked normal. 4/8 We are trying bronchodialators to relieve the pressure on the left lung. Turtle is eating fairly well. 4/12 There seems to be somewhat less pressure in the left lung and the turtle is eating much better. 4/18 Aspirated air from the left lung and turtle is now able to submerge. Appetite is good, but anemia has gotten worse. Starting new treatment. 4/23 Anemia is now improving, but appetite is off slightly. Planning to do another bronchoscopy soon to reevaluate the lung. 5/11 Lung is much better, but turtle has quit eating altogether. We have been tube feeding it twice daily for the last week. 6/1 Turtle has continued to decline and died this afternoon. 6/2 Necropsy revealed abscesses in the right lung, esophagus and stomach (with gastric rupture), as well as a generalized gastroenteritis. Cause of death was peritonitis (coelomitis) from the gastric rupture.
