Comments/Disposition:
This turtle was found floating in the surf on Casey Key in heavy surf following Tropical Storm Henri. The turtle is very lethargic and emaciated. Blood tests have been taken to diagnose the condition. 9/9 Turtle has a high white count and high blood glucose and appears to have a fungal enteritis. Radiographs were negative. Turtle is a little stronger today and was placed in shallow water for part of the day. 9/12 Turtle is being tube fed twice daily and is now in shallow water all the time. Turtle seems a little stronger each day and white count has improved. 9/17 Still having to tube the turtle. X-rays revealed that the turtle has developed pneumonia that is making the turtle float sideways. Have changed antibiotics. 9/21 There had been almost no change over the past few days and the turtle died this afternoon. Necropsy planned for tomorrow. 9/22 Necropsy revealed severe lung pathology, but nothing else was apparent. Tissues will be sent off for histopathology. Results when they become available. 9/30 Pathology results indicate spirorchids (blood flukes) throughout most tissues, including the lungs and liver.
