Comments/Disposition:
This turtle was found floating in Sarasota Bay off the south end of Longboat Key. It was covered in large barnacles and was bloated. It had obviously been sick for some time. It shows signs of pneumonia, neurological symptoms (probably caused by red tide), and ascites (chronic food deprivation). It has been started on antibiotics, fluids, and a diuretic. 3/7 Turtle's neurological symptoms have disappeared (typical of red tide once they are out of it) and the pneumonia is improving. Not eating yet, but still strong. 3/23 Turtle is greatly improved. It is now eating well and gaining weight. Pneumonia appears to be gone and white count is almost normal. 3/31 Turtle has been taken off antibiotics and is doing very well. 4/3 Continuing to do very well. 4/8 Turtle continues to do very well. Gaining weight quickly. 4/12 Turtle is now consuming some vegetables in addition to shrimp, squid, and fish. 4/18 Turtle is doing very well and gaining more weight. 4/23 Have had to reduce the food intake as turtle is beginning to get overweight and that is causing increase in liver enzymes. If this lowers the liver enzymes, we may be able to release turtle soon. 5/11 Things are looking good for a release in the next two weeks. 6/10 We have had red tide return to the area where we planned to release this turtle. Release has been temporarily delayed. 6/30 Turtle was released yesterday off Manasota Key.
