3/3/2010  This turtle arrived from the St. Lucie Power Plant, where it was found in an intake canal with multiple shallow scrapes on the carapace and soft tissues.  Turtle has multiple large fibropapilloma tumors and old healed injuries to both rear flippers.  Turtle was fairly strong on admission and was placed in shallow water immediately.  3/7 Ziggy had surgery to remove fibropapilloma tumors yesterday. Recovery from anesthesia was slow, but uneventful. The turtle is back in the water and eating today.  3/25  Ziggy continues to eat well and tumors currently show no sign of regrowth. Turtle is still on antibiotics due to suspicion of pneumonia and a slightly elevated white blood cell count.  4/17  Turtle has been eating well and surgical wounds are virtually healed.  White blood cell count remains slightly elevated so turtle has been switched to a different antibiotic.  5/23  Ziggy continues to show signs of infection or inflammation on bloodwork, but is otherwise doing very well. Wounds are healed and turtle is eating very well.  6/8  Turtle has one small new papilloma tumor on the left shoulder.  Eating well and acting normally, but we are still struggling with an elevated white blood cell count that is not responding to antibiotics.  Have switched to a different injectable medication to try to get this under control. 6/10 Turtle has one small new papilloma tumor on the left shoulder.  Eating well and acting normally, but we are still struggling with an elevated white blood cell count that is not responding to antibiotics.  Have switched to a different injectable medication to try to get this under control. 6/22 Ziggy recently underwent cryosurgery, a procedure in which liquid nitrogen is used to freeze a growth, similar to what a dermatologist would do to remove a growth on humans. The turtle is otherwise doing well and is being monitored closely for any other new growths. 7/25 Ziggy will be released on the east coast tomorrow. 7/26 Released!
