MayHou is one of several sea turtles rescued as part of a mass stranding event in Massachusetts due to cold water temperatures. Sea turtles, which are reptiles, become lethargic and their internal organs and bodily functions can be hindered or shut down altogether when water temperatures drop low enough and they become hypothermic. This turtle arrived at Mote with Grinch and Augustus.
The turtles were sent to Florida after initial rescue and treatment by the New England Aquarium. Other facilities that have taken cold stunned turtles from this stranding event include Sea World, Volusia Marine Science Center, Loggerhead Marinelife Center and the Florida Aquarium. |
12/27 MayHou has adjusted very well to the medical pool — swimming and resting on the bottom. Seems active and alert. Will not take food on its own, so still must have hands-on feeding. Turtle is on antibiotic treatment and fluid therapy. Potassium, iron and calcium levels are all low, so the turtle is receiving supplements for each.1/5 Blood work has improved some, antiobiotic treatment and potassium supplements have been discontinued. Turtle started on iron injections. Turtle's diet has been increased. 1/18 Iron injections discontinued. 1/28 Blood work shows high glucose which may indicate stress. Calcium supplements reduced. Turtle may be eligible for release soon. 2/15 It looks like MayHou is doing great! We expect her to be released Tuesday, Feb. 19, by the FWC from Florida's east coast. 2/19 Released!
