MARINE POLICY INSTITUTE
at Mote Marine Laboratory
Connecting Science to Society
The mission of the Marine Policy Institute (MPI) is to strengthen the scientific basis of public policy and societal decision-making for economic development and sustainability of our oceans and coastal ecosystems. Working closely with Mote scientists and other programs, MPI conducts, integrates and communicates multi-disciplinary research on marine/coastal issues in a manner that produces salient, credible assessments and advice in policy (legal, economic, social) to decision-makers, stakeholder groups and concerned citizens.
The range of policy issues to be addressed by the Institute
is broad. Subject to available resources the Institute will respond to
the needs of the both marine science and marine policy communities as well as
the research interests of its core staff. Land-sea interactions in the
coastal zone will be a major theme for the Institute during its start-up phase
(2007-2009) as will the policy implications of research being conducted across
Mote Marine Laboratory's seven research centers. Products will be in the form
of scientific papers, include issue briefs, a newsletter and an interactive web
site.
The MPI's first product is an assessment of Florida red tide, including the
causes, consequences, associated activities and governance issues. Other substantive science policy issues within
this land-sea theme to be explored during 2007-2009 will include coastal and
beach resource management and marine zoning for habitat and species
conservation. Products will be in the form of scientific papers, issue
briefs, a newsletter and through this website.
